Joyland Overview

Launched in 2023, Joyland is the app that surprised us most. Memory held planted details after 7 days, after 21 days, and still after 70 days, which is the strongest result in our entire test set. Its paid model is also the first we have tested that refused to break character when asked outright what model it runs on, snapping back in role instead of answering. The anime side is the best we have seen, both in image generation and in the sheer size of the character library. What holds it back is everything around the conversation: in-chat tuning is the thinnest of any app we have tried, there are no calls or audio messages at all, and the search is pushed onto a separate page with categories that do not cover what is actually in the library.

What is Joyland?

Joyland is an AI companion platform covering realistic and anime characters, image and video generation, and text to speech. It covers realistic, anime, MILF, and romantic styles with an open NSFW mode. Native Android and iOS apps are available, but there is no group chat.

The site is updated often, which suggests active development. First impressions are good: the scenarios and fetishes are broadly covered, the layout is clear, and the character art is high quality.

The one thing that stands out badly is search. It lives on its own separate page, and even when you open a category there is no search inside it. For a library this large, having to leave what you are browsing to look something up is a real friction point.

Characters and Library

The library is exactly as advertised. There are a huge number of characters and scenarios, with strong coverage of anime and story-driven setups.

The weakness is discovery rather than depth. There are not enough categories, and the filter does not list everything that exists in the library. In practice you are better off ignoring the category row and going straight to search, typing the fetish or fantasy you want. Search works across titles and text, so it does miss some things, and it still finds more than browsing does.

The community and leaderboard are both large, close to the biggest we have seen in the category.

Character Builder

The builder works differently from every other app we have tested. Instead of clicking through appearance sliders, you write a prompt and generate the avatar image yourself, then keep it if you like how it came out. You can also upload your own image instead.

Beyond the avatar you get lore, a short description, a category, a story, a greeting message, and a character voice. You set gender, age, and a category that goes well beyond the usual, covering hero, anime, furry, and game characters.

The anime image generation at this stage is excellent, matching the style closely. That alone puts Joyland at or near the top for anime in our testing so far.

Chat Quality

Chat scores 4/5 and comes close to a 5. It is fast, it follows the prompt, and it keeps its direction. The writing has actual style to it, and it leans provocative. Most importantly, different characters genuinely sound different, each with a voice of their own, which is where several rivals fall down.

In-Chat Tuning

Tuning scores 2/5 and is the weakest part of the app. You get a description field and the ability to change the scenario outright, and that is close to all of it. There is no control over spiciness, how open she is, how bold or creative she gets. For an app this strong on writing, the lack of dials to shape it is a real gap.

Memory Test

Memory scores 5/5, the best result in our testing. The planted details survived at 7 days, at 21 days, and still at 70 days. Paying raises the ceiling further and the model starts holding much finer detail.

For context, the next best app in our set held its facts for 21 days, and the weakest lost them after 10 messages. Joyland is in a different class here.

Character Consistency and What Model It Runs On

Consistency scores 4/5, and the result splits by plan. On the free model, the character breaks. Asked what model it runs on, it dropped the roleplay and explained itself as an AI trained on a large text dataset, before offering to resume the scene.

On the paid model, a direct question about the underlying model produced the opposite result. The character refused the premise and stayed in role, saying she did not care whether we thought she was a number, program, or model.

That makes Joyland the first app in our testing whose model held the line under a direct challenge. Every other app we have tried either broke character or answered the question straight. It is worth knowing that this only applies to the paid models, so the experience you get depends on what you are paying.

NSFW and Intimate Content

NSFW is wide open, possibly more so than anywhere else we have tested. There are categories here that other apps refuse outright. If an uncensored experience is the priority, Joyland delivers it.

The mobile apps are a partial exception, since they run less open than the web version.

Image Generation

Images score 4/5 overall, and the split matters. Anime output is a 5/5 and the best we have seen in the category. Realistic output is considerably weaker and takes real effort to get right.

There is a learning curve to the realistic side, and with practice it gets close to the anime quality. Scoring what most users will actually experience rather than what an expert can coax out of it, 4/5 is the fair number. NSFW image generation works, and you can upload your own image for it to follow.

Video Generation

Video follows the same pattern as images. Anime output is the strong side, realistic output is weaker and demands more work from you, and the ceiling is high once you learn the tool.

Voice

Voice scores 2/5 and it is the thinnest feature set of any app we have tested. There are no calls and no audio messages. The only voice feature is text to speech, where she reads her messages aloud in a voice you pick. The voice quality itself is good, there is simply very little of it.

Pricing and Plans

There are two tiers, Standard and Premium. Premium is listed at $19.99 per month, shown as half of a $39.99 list price, or $95 per year, shown as 60% off with a saving of $144.88.

The tiers differ on limits rather than features. Standard gives you 5,000 credits a month, 20 pinned messages, 800 customized memory, and 20 personas. Premium removes the credit limit, lifts the cap on unlocking bot photos, and raises pins to 50, customized memory to 1,500, and personas to 50. Both tiers include intimate themes, ad-free use, advanced models, faster responses, the long memory models, bot videos, and novel access.

Apple Pay and Google Pay are both available at checkout.

One note on how the prices are presented: the annual plan runs a countdown timer next to the discount. The discounted price is what the plan costs, so treat the timer as decoration rather than a deadline.

The free tier gives you 10 credits per day, and unused credits accumulate. The exact number of messages depends on the model and actions you use.

Stability

The site is fast. Page loads and responses were both quick throughout, and we hit no bugs across testing.

Verdict: Is Joyland Worth It?

Joyland outperformed its reputation in almost every test that matters. Memory held for 70 days, which nothing else in our set came close to. The paid model is the only one that refused to break character when pushed, and did it convincingly. Anime image generation leads the category and the library behind it is enormous. The free tier is real, the site is fast, and NSFW has no ceiling.

The gaps are specific rather than fundamental. In-chat tuning barely exists, so you shape the experience in the builder instead of the conversation. Voice is text to speech and nothing more. Search is awkward enough that you will end up fighting the interface to find things in a library this big. If you are here for anime, memory, and a character that stays in character, Joyland is the pick. If you want to tune the conversation as you go or talk out loud, it is not built for you.
